Is it Sunnah to drink standing up?

Naṣāʾiḥ of Ibn Muneer - 0008

Q: Fulan, Sheffield UK. How do we reconcile between the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ prohibiting drinking standing up and him doing it?

A: There are many ways of harmonizing between these types of hadiths, many ways. From them, is to say that it’s Haram to drink standing up unless there is a need or a necessity. A need, or a necessity. In which there’s a crowd of people around, you don’t have the ability to sit down, you need the water, لا بأس. Another way is to say that it’s not Haram but it’s just disliked. (arabic) You shouldn’t do it but it’s not Haram. So the hadith that says “don’t drink standing up”, if you drink standing up then (the speaker says something sounds like “spit up”?), would you like Shaitan to drink with you, would you like this person to drink with you standing up, meaning, you shouldn't do it, and the hadith in which the Prophet, he drank standing up, proving that you can do it. Okay? There’re different way of harmonizing between this and the ulema of Islam, they differ on the actual ruling, be ith nillahi taala perhaps those who say, that it is Haram to drink standing up, but permissible to do it if there is a need or difficulty, perhaps that is a strong view. Perhaps that’s a what, strong view. As Sheikh-ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah ta'ala) has explained in detail, and Allah knows best.
